A friend read my article proposing a standardized feed of downloadable games, and suggested that I jumpstart that concept with creation of a database feed highlighting all available online games, with links to transactions for each of them. He proposed that that could serve as a proof-of-concept allowing the full range of Twitter/Steam/xfire-like applications and customized web functionality. -Lacking, however, the embedded transaction model that’s central to the business concept, so it’d be very much limited to proof. He’s a pretty smart guy, maybe the sharpest in looking at just this sort of content, so I was actively regretting that I’m already a bit too overloaded with projects to start on that one immediately.

It’s not quite the same thing, but a well executed new database of downloadable and browser-based, specifically indie, games launched recently. Jeff Lindsay and Derek Yu built the thing, and have a nice set of variables enabled; meaty, and a meaningful piece of what I’d propose. They could add a few pieces, make it into a standardized feed, and save me some effort.

I think that Greg Costikyan’s playthisthing.com is still by far the best place to find interesting indie games; meaningful indie content is rare enough that one thoughtful new review a day really covers the category (full disclosure, it’s also part of the vast Manifesto empire, with which I am clearly deeply involved, although not that site), but the flexibility of tigsource’s database is a nifty approach.

It’s a list of games carefully chosen by one guy for best useability. Some of the games fall short but not many. And there are some great ones here, almost all free and cross-platform, mostly at the simple end. Lots of elegant games here.
